The Yankees continue to build depth for the post-season when they acquired Kerry Wood today. Wood wasted Cleveland’s time for almost two season but he might be able to actually do something useful now. Let’s take a look at the changing fantasy values:
Kerry Wood – He will pitch in the seventh inning in New York and if Joba Chamberlain doesn’t get his act together then he could eventually work the eighth. He has no value in leagues that don’t count holds and he should be dropped in mixed leagues.
Chris Perez – He was already owned in most leagues and now he can be retained for the rest of the season. The Indians really like him as a long-term closer and this deal was made solely for the purpose of allowing him to develop in that role without embarrassing Wood by making him the set-up man on a bad team.
Phil Hughes – There was some talk that if the Yankees traded for a starter instead of a reliever Hughes would go back to the bullpen later in the season and work the eighth inning down the stretch and in the playoffs. He won’t work in relief during the season, however we can’t rule it out in the playoffs.
