He got a large deal but will he have a large role?

The Angels made a move to solidify their bullpen by bringing in Fernando Rodney. Whether or not Rodney will actually help them as much as his $11 million salary suggests is open for debate. Either way, let’s look at the fantasy value for Rodney and other players affected by the signing.
Fernando Rodney – He didn’t get as much money as he originally wanted, but he still got more than he deserved. Rodney is a very average reliever and he is now paid like someone who is better than that. He will not close in Los Angeles as long as Brian Fuentes is around. He is not worth mixed league consideration and is barely worth an AL-Only spot. He hasn’t had an ERA under 4.00 or a WHIP under 1.30 in any of the past three seasons so it’s hard to see how he can help a fantasy team if he isn’t closing. It’s doubtful that he will get a chance to beat Fuentes out for the closer job.
Joel Zumaya – Rodney’s official departure from Detroit clears the way for the team to use a new closer. So far, the team has said that Zumaya will get the first shot at the job. He has significant injury concerns and also some concerns that he can perform consistently enough to keep the job. He will definitely be someone to monitor closely in spring training.
Ryan Perry – He is considered to be a long-term closing option for Detroit. He isn’t supposed to get saves in 2010 but he could get a chance if Zumaya falters and the Tigers don’t bring in a veteran. It’s a long-shot right now but it is worth a late-round AL-Only pick.
